Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was a spin-off from the Final Fantasy series, released in 1992. It's purpose was to introduce Western audiences to RPGs and broaden the appeal of the genre. It was touted as an "Entry-Level Role-Playing Adventure". The game was received quite poorly, with the main complaints being that it was too dumbed down, and it was much shallower in comparison to Final Fantasy II, which was released less than 12 months earlier.
In 1993, FFMQ was released in Europe under the title "Mystic Quest: Legend". The intention of this was so that it would be associated with Final Fantasy Adventure, the first entry of the Mana series, which was itself released in Europe as "Mystic Quest". It was not until a few years ago (after playing FFX) that I even discovered that MQ:L was a Final Fantasy game.
It was the first RPG I ever played, and the first game I remember calling my "favourite" (This probably speaks volumes for the games dumbed-down-itude). Nostalgia is the keyword here, and I want to show it off!
